Turn Your Idea Into a Book

Maybe you’re one of those lucky writers whose head is bursting with ideas. Or perhaps you have one idea that’s been nagging you for weeks, always at the edge of your thoughts. Either way, you’re itching to begin writing. That’s good. But before you rush headlong into your story, stop and ask yourself one question: Is this just an idea, or is it a book?

Ideas, of course, are the seeds of any work of fiction or nonfiction. But until an idea is fully developed, until you can envision its beginning, middle and end, that one idea might not be enough. The experience of writing for pages about an idea and ultimately getting nowhere (or getting a pile of rejections) has taught many writers to outline their books before they begin. But if the thought of an outline sends shivers up your spine, at least thinking your idea through and making sure it merits months of writing can save you future frustration.

Ideas for Fiction

A lot of writers, especially when they’re beginners, get ideas for fiction from their own lives. This can be useful for several reasons: you’re emotionally invested in the topic, you can relate directly to the main character, and if the situation actually happened to you, you’re less likely to be unconsciously basing the story on a book you’ve read. But remember, just because you find this thing that happened to you or your child fascinating, it doesn’t mean it will be fascinating to thousands of potential readers. Very often, a real-life event is just that–an event. It’s a vivid scene you recall with pleasure, or a family joke that’s repeated over and over. It evokes strong emotions when you remember it, perhaps you even look back on an event as a turning point in your life. But only rarely does reality provide a plot.

When writers stick too closely to what really happened they fail to develop the elements necessary for a good story: a believable main character who is faced with a problem or conflict, mounting tension as that character tries to solve her problem and experiences setbacks, and a tension- filled climax followed by a resolution that’s satisfying to the character and the reader. If your main character is really your son, you might not want to get him in trouble or throw rocks in his path. But you have to. It’s the only way you’ll create a story that will keep readers hooked and wondering how it will end.

Speaking of endings, if the resolution of your story comes too easily, it’s probably obvious and predictable. Try mixing up real life and have the situation evolve in a different direction. Surprise yourself, and you’ll surprise an editor.

However you get your idea, focus first on whether it’s a plot or a theme. Many times, an initial idea is really the underlying meaning of the story, what the author wants to convey to the reader. Themes should be universal in their appeal– such as friendship, appreciating one’s own strengths, not judging others too quickly. Then play around with the sequence of events until you develop a plot (what actually happens in the book) that makes this theme clear to the reader. And remember; if you’re using a childhood incident as the foundation of your story, tell it from your childhood viewpoint, not how it feels to you now as an adult.

Ideas for Nonfiction

Your nonfiction book should be based on something you’re truly interested in and passionate about. After all, you’ll be living with this idea for many months. The key to successful nonfiction is to take your idea and approach it in a way that no one else has ever done before. This means doing most of your research before you begin to write. Don’t settle for the most easily-found information on your topic–your readers have probably read the same information. Keep digging until you find an aspect to your subject that strikes you as unique. Then search through the library and book stores to make sure no one else has already beat you to it.

For a nonfiction idea to become a book, you need enough information to fill the number of pages necessary, depending on the age group for which you plan to write. Younger children need a foundation of basic facts, but you can also get fairly detailed within the scope of the approach you’ve chosen as long as you explain concepts in a simple and straightforward manner (how animals hibernate, why insects are different colors). Older readers can draw on a broader foundation of knowledge, and infer connections between your topic and related subjects. A detailed outline of any nonfiction book is essential to help you see if your idea has enough substance and originality, or if you need further research before you begin writing.

Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, your idea should mean something to you, but also have the potential to mean a lot to your readers. Think it through, add to it, take the nonessential elements away, and make sure it has a beginning, middle and end. Only then will your “idea” turn into “an idea for a book.”

About

First of all let me tell you what captivated me most… it was the cover picture of a man with his back towards the reader, matted hair-locks bearing an unmistaken resemblance to Lord Shiva, with the backdrop of the “Trishul” (probably one reason, why the figure can immediately be related to Shiva). The story inside thus revolves around the a journey of the beginning of the legend of Shiva, a young mortal and his being deified to the stature of a God or Mahadev due to his “Karma”.

The flow of the story and the format of this being first of the trilogy, gives it a “Lord of the Ring” flavour with a lot of Myth and history put in the right places. The reader these days are well informed about the Hindu mysticism and ancient history and hence the story follows a familiar gripping tale of Shiva, His eccentric ways of life, Sati, Her sacrifice and other ancient Shiva related beliefs known today. The written matter can be easily related to the ancient Indian settings of the Indus Valley civilization and the non-Aryan mortals of those days with a strong reference to the good vs. evil sagas that we have been induced since childhood.

Amish Tripathi (yet another IITian) brings a fresh look at the legend of Shiva as being a mortal in the beginning, rising through various life tests again and again, to be accepted as a saviour for the people of Meluha eventually becoming a diety worshipped by the lesser mortals. Shiva has been depicted as a strong, muscularly built, intelligent, tactful, charismatic and witty person, who wins over all Meluhans thus making a mark for himself. Even the Meluhan King and his army chief give him the respect he deserves and gets from other fellow Meluhans.

The mystic medical ways of the ancient world also come to fore with the mentions of how Shiva consumed the poison from the oceans to become “Neelkanth” and the use of “Somrasa” for curing Sati’s injury from the Nagas. Apart from Shiva being depicted as a human, the other heavenly beings we know today e.g. Brahma, Brahaspati, Nandi, are all depicted in this book as non-Godly, much human and real-life with extraordinary powers as a result of their intelligence.

The First part of the trilogy has been very well written with an excellent narrative quality to the ancient tale. The manner, in which the end has been written, provides a delectable prologue to the the book ending with a suitable twist, leaving you wanting and waiting in anticipation for Book 2 of the Meluha legend. Let me say that this is one of the very good non fiction books that you can look at.

In his second book in the Millennium series, it is absolutely apparent that Stieg is inspired by the crime and murder mystery writers of the world. The pace of this book though not as fast as the first one (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), it does give the normal ups and downs of any racy detective novel by the likes of Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton. There are references of these authors and many more in several parts and gives the same feeling as the books in their genre.

As a sequel to the previous book, this one also published posthumously, the author dives deeper into the life of the protagonist. We see a lot of investigative journalism from the Mikeal, who in this novel is more prominent as he is trying to help his detective friend Lisbeth from imminent capture, which is where the story takes off from the sexual exploitation and violence theme of the previous book. There are issues in the society which have been dealt with in this novel too. Sometimes one is left wondering as if these were true stories blended into a fictional tale of crusaders for the society.

The story develops well from the beginning and the incidents and characters are woven very well into this book. “The Girl Who Played with Fire” complements the previous book in the series and compels to take up the next as soon as you finish this.

Subtle flash-backs refer to the back story of Lisbeth, which is good. One pointer towards the drawback I saw, there is a presence of too many characters slowly getting embroiled into the plot and the many sub-plots in the book. The reader may have to deal with this in their own way.

The best thing about this sequel is the slow development of the pace which towards the end leaves the reader wanting for a quick finish to the suspense of Lisbeth hanging on to her dear life. At the end, I guess this book is more to do with why and how the protagonist becomes what she is today! This is one of the very good fiction books I’ve come across.

Tony Blair’s most recent revelation of his political life comes out as a good read, providing real life incidents and insights into his political development towards the major election win of 1997. This was a highly awaited memoir from Tony Blair who stands out in the global arena as a very dynamic statesman and leader who brought United Kingdom to the fore under the Labour government. The book offers readers a “from-the-horses-mouth” version of Blair’s movement in politics leading up to the surprising Labour Party win and his becoming the Prime Minister. This book speaks a lot of his legacy before the end of 18 years of the Conservative government rule.

The book covers his journey which were earmarked with lots of ups and downs and covers a lot of his speeches, various letters to intra and inter government people and large number of articles written on his trials and triumphs over a period of 20 years (from early 1980 to 2004, which is when the book was actually published). Blair has been very candid in some parts and cryptic in others. His candidness comes out specially to describe his hate relationship with Gordon Brown in one episode of how Brown once tried to blackmail him with a threat of an investigation on a peerage deal if Blair did not forego his plans for bringing a reform in the pension act. This part reveals what is called the nasty side of UK politics.

His relationship with George Bush and his visits to the US, Camp David, Bush’s ranch, his family life have all been touched upon, some of them with a pinch of salt. In one statement he happens to mention that he usually did not like his family to accompany him on some important tours. That way he could only concentrate on the job at hand and not bother about the needs of his family! He offers the reader a view of how the global world becomes a complex set of networks between inter governmental politics. His role during the Iraq conflict, though not explicit, but has been cryptic enough in admitting that he could have done things differently rather than blindly follow what Bush had to say.

What this book fails to deliver is on the post-1997 era, where the accounts are more related to the daily rigmarole of his government rule for 13 years. However, overall, it does give a full round view of a sharp and agile world leader. This book does offer a fast-paced and compelling read.

The Author

Born in Edinburgh in 1953, Tony Blair delved into politics at a young age of 30 years when he won as an MP from Sedgefield in the year 1983. He moved up the ranks to become the leader of the Labour Party in 1994 and led the party to a major election win in 1997 to become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He went onto ruling for a decade from there on till June 2007.His post Downing Street stint has been eventful too, with his involvement as one of the Representatives to the Middle East for the Quartet (USA, UN, Russia and EU) to work towards preparing the Palestinians for statehood. He is also the founder of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation (launched in May 2008) which aims at promoting faith as a modern force for peace. He is also working closely with climate crusaders to formulate an international climate policy framework.
